This is not the classic light imagery. Today we will work with colored light that does not enter the body. This specific exercise helps to reduce transference, but as you will see the basic idea offers almost endless possibilities. Feel free to develop your own version of this and adapt it to your needs.
Please find a comfortable position that makes you feel safe and supported. Take a moment to examine your position and make changes if needed. You can close your eyes or soften your gaze or even take turns, whatever you feel like.
Maybe you can find your attention and lead it to your breathing. Then you could notice how you are slowly breathing in, filling your lungs, and how the air slowly streams out again through your mouth or your nose, and maybe you can even relax a little.
When you are ready you can ask your imagination for directions to the place of light within you. Maybe it is a clearing in a magic forest, maybe a huge cave with decorated stone walls or a high-tech laboratory with glass and stainless steel. It could be a spiritual place or somewhere in space, whatever comes to your mind.
When you look around you might see lights of different colors waiting for you. How are they arranged? Are they sitting in a row, or maybe a circle or half circle? Are they down on the floor or maybe floating, up at the ceiling or creating a certain shape? What colors can you see? All the colors of the rainbow can be found within light. Is there a source for the lights? Maybe crystals, lamps or stars? Or it is just the essence of light?
What else can you see in that place?
Is there any sound? Maybe the lights have a melody within them, and maybe it is all reverently silent. Can you smell the place? What is the temperature like? And with all those lights in one place, what does the air look like? If you look around you might find a special place, maybe a spot, a circle, a small stage or a stone, where you can stand when you summon your lights.
Maybe you could take a moment to absorb all the details around you.
This is the place where you can meet with your helping lights.
I wonder if you can take a closer look at the colored lights. Then you might find that they are all different and they all carry a power to help you. There might be a light of comfort that could wrap around you like a blanket, maybe there is a calming light that can help you relax. What colors do they have? Look around. Maybe you can find your healing light that can fill your body with new strength and clarity. There could be lights for protection, loving care, peace or wisdom and truth too. Do they have special colors? Take your time to look at every single light you can find. There might be more when you return next time.
If you like you can call the light of truth to help you today. It is a light that exposes the truth in love. What color does it have? I wonder if there is a certain word or a gesture that will call it. You can step into the special place for summoning and call it to shine on you.
If there are any insecurities you are feeling, any questions or doubts you are having within you, you could hold them out to the light of truth. It will make the things shine in bright clarity, exposing all that, deep within yourself, you know is true.
If you are bringing a situation today you could imagine placing the scene on the spot, stage or stone to be touched by the light.
If it is something about yourself you might want to step into the light and let it show you who you really are, without your self-doubt, negative thoughts and limiting beliefs: just the core of you. The light is full of love and gentleness and understanding when it shines on you. It knows the truth about it all, the whole picture, and it won’t ever judge.
Maybe you came with a question about someone else. That could be a friend, your therapist, your partner or any other person you know. Sometimes we don’t see other people clearly or the picture gets all mixed and confused with other people of another time and place. If there is someone you need to see more clearly, you can invite their image to come to the place of light now and stand on the spot, stage or stone to be touched by the light of truth. Find a place where you can watch this easily to see what will happen.
Maybe you will notice that the person looks translucent and colorless at first.
Try to remember all the things you know about this person for sure. You could imagine these things as puzzle pieces or post-it notes with your truth written or painted on them. Try to place them on the person standing in the light. If it is an actual truth about the person it will stick to them, adding color and substance to the picture of their personality. If the light decides that it is not a truth that you know for sure it will not stick and simply slide down the person.
Try to find everything you think you know about them. You could start with outside appearance, then add things you know about their life, then you could try a few things you think you know about their personality and opinions. You could also do this with things you think you know about the way they think or feel about you.
With every piece that sticks you can get a better picture of the person who is standing in the light. There is more color, more substance to them and you see them clearly.
You might also find that there are a lot of translucent spots left. That can show you that you actually don’t know that much about that person. Sometimes it can be interesting to notice a lack of knowing the truth of someone.
You could turn your attention to the pieces or notes that did not stick at all. These were things you thought you knew, but truth shows that you actually don’t know for sure. Maybe these will show you things you want to ask or examine further to find certainty. And maybe these are things that don’t belong with the person who is standing in the light right now. Maybe, when you look at them you can figure out where these words or pictures really belong. You could pick them up and store or contain them somewhere else so these thoughts don’t confuse your image of the person in front of you in the future.
Do this as long as you need to. Take your time.
Only when you are sure that you have finished your puzzle, when you have observed what you know and what you don’t know and also what you thought you knew, you can lead the person from the spot or stage or stone and send them on their way.
Maybe you would like to thank your light of truth before you release it to return to its place among the other lights. I wonder if there is a special word or gesture for that too.
Look around again and see if there is another light that might serve you now.
Take all the time you need for this.
[move on to a different light exercise if you wish]
When every light is back at its place and you are ready to leave, you can tell them goodbye, maybe bow in gratitude and find your way back to your body. Take your attention and lead it to the room you are sitting in, hear the noises around you, feel the chair or surface you are sitting on, move around a little and when you are ready you can open your eyes, take a deep breath and fully return to the present.
This exercise was actually created when we read the Bible:
„A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God.“ Revelations 4:3+5
„But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth.“ John 16:13
I hope you will give this a try and when you do, don’t forget to come back and tell me about it in the comments!

Hi Theresa
I do a similar exercise, for a different outcome. But, one thing I would recommend is that the practitioner repeat this exercise regularly AND note the differences.
You’re setting up an internal dialogue with a higher aspect of yourself. You’re communicating through analogy. By doing the exercise regularly and noting how it changes, one begins to understand the language of the analogy and can then deepen the discourse with yourself.
As always, a pleasure to read. Brett
